Laser Vein Treatment

What is laser vein removal and laser vein treatment?

Spider veins are small blue, purple, or red veins that can appear on the legs or face. These veins are not painful or harmful, but you may want them treated for aesthetic reasons. The gold standard for spider vein removal is sclerotherapy, or injection of the vein for destruction. Some veins are too small for this to be effective. Laser vein removal/reduction uses heat energy to collapse these smaller blood vessels. This treatment can also be used to treat cherry angiomas. After your consultation, our providers may recommend a combination of sclerotherapy and laser vein removal/reduction to achieve your desired results.

Important Pre-Treatment Instructions for Laser Vein Treatment

  • Avoid medications and supplements such as Ibuprofen, Motrin, Aleve, fish oil, vitamin E, and ginkgo biloba for 7 days prior to your treatment to reduce post treatment bruising
  • If you are taking Aspirin electively and NOT at the recommendation of a physician, stop for 48 hours prior to your treatment. Do NOT stop Aspirin if prescribed or recommended by a physician
  • Wear loose fitting clothes. It is recommended to bring or wear shorts if you are having your legs treated
  • Avoid sun exposure, vigorous activity, and use of hot tubs/saunas/spas for at least 48 hours post treatment
  • Plan accordingly if you are having facial veins treated. There may be minor bruising and/or swelling for a week or more following treatment. This can typically be covered with make-up, but it is recommended you avoid treatment just prior to a major event
  • There will likely be minor bruising, swelling, welting, and/or discoloration over leg veins after treatment.
  • Results can take weeks to months to be fully seen. Typically, the best time to treat leg veins is in the fall, winter, and spring when you are less likely to have sun exposure and/or wear shorts
